Merging is where uploading is hardest to justify
People merge PDFs to assemble a submission: a mortgage application, an expense claim, a grant report, a set of invoices for an accountant. It is almost never a single harmless file — it is a stack of them, and the whole stack goes to the server on a site that offers to merge them for free.
QuietFiles reads each document into memory in your browser, copies the pages into a new document with pdf-lib, and gives you the result. No document, and no page of one, is ever sent anywhere.
What is preserved
Page content, vector text, embedded fonts and images are copied across intact — the merged file is not a re-print or a set of flattened images, so text stays selectable and searchable. Interactive form fields and some annotation types may not survive a merge; if the documents contain forms you intend to keep fillable, check the result.
Questions
What order will the pages be in?
The order of the list, which is the order you added the files. Remove and re-add a file to move it to the end.
How many PDFs can I merge?
As many as your device has memory for — dozens is routine. All the documents have to be held in memory at once to be merged, so extremely large scans are the practical limit, and you will get a clear message rather than a crashed tab if you reach it.
Will the merged PDF stay searchable?
Yes. Pages are copied, not re-rendered, so text remains real text and stays selectable and searchable.
Are my documents uploaded?
No. The merge happens entirely in your browser. You can watch the Network tab while it runs and see that nothing goes out.
Can I merge a password-protected PDF?
No. Encrypted documents cannot be opened for merging, and you will see a message saying so. Remove the password in your PDF reader first.
