What converting to PNG does and does not do
PNG is lossless, so the PNG you get back is a pixel-exact copy of the JPG. What it cannot do is recover detail the JPG already threw away — the compression artefacts baked into a JPG are part of the image now, and PNG preserves them faithfully. Converting is worth doing when you are about to edit and re-save repeatedly, since each JPG save compounds the loss, or when a tool requires PNG input.
Expect the PNG to be considerably larger than the JPG. That is the trade: exactness costs bytes.
Questions
Does JPG to PNG improve image quality?
No, and no converter can. PNG stores exactly what it is given, so it preserves the JPG as-is, including the compression artefacts already in it. The benefit is that further edits and re-saves will not degrade it any more.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. A JPG has no transparency information, so there is nothing to restore. The PNG will look identical to the JPG, with a solid background.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG compresses losslessly, which is far less efficient than JPG for photographs. A three-times increase is normal, and more is possible for detailed images.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser. You can confirm it in your browser’s Network tab while converting.
